Between the 31st August and 2nd September 2004, the RCAHMS Commissioners were taken to visit a number of significant sites recently recorded by the staff in Perth and Angus. To inform this trip an illustrated guide was prepared with a brief summary description of each site, and an introductory text. These short site descriptions were entered into the Canmore database in 2017, but readers are advised to consult the final publication for the most detailed account.

1019654	DESCRIPTIVE ACCOUNTS	PUBLICATION ACCOUNT	In 1957 a temporary roof was installed over the west end with grants from The Russell Trust and Am Fasgardh to preserve the crucks and hanging lum, and John Dunbar published a detailed analysis in Proc Soc Antiq Scotland, 90 (1956-7). It appears to date from the 18th century and retains six couples or pairs of crucks. The cruck principles, resting on stone slabs, rise to a yoke, while an additional spar resting on the yoke, supports the ridge. Latterly it was divided into two houses, hense the two kitchen hearths. As originally constructed, however, it probably comprised a dwelling and byre. It was partically restored in 1992, and the work was only completed in 1997 when the 1957 temporary roof was replaced. 1019652	DESCRIPTIVE ACCOUNTS	PUBLICATION ACCOUNT	Sir Alexander Menzies rebuilt the pre-reformation rectangular church in 1609, adding a burial aisle to the north to create the existing T-plan church. Although there are rectangular openings on the south front, the gables have arched windows. Deborah Howard recognised these as the only pointed arch openings in a surviving Scottish Church built between 1560 and 1620. Inside is the magnificent Menzies tomb of 1616 proudly boasting the patron's ancestry from Huntly, Edzell and Lawers. Further alterations and repairs took place in 1753. The church moved into the New Kirk in 1870 and the Menzies Mausoleum was formed with its rubble interior and painted hatchments. 1019655	DESCRIPTIVE ACCOUNTS	PUBLICATION ACCOUNT	The village owes its current picturesque form to Sir Donald Currie who owned the Garth and Fortingall estates in the later 19th century. He employed James Marjoribanks Maclaren, an accomplished young architect from Stirlingshire, based in London to redevelop the estate. In 1886 Maclaren designed the farmhouse and steading at Balnald and then in 1889 the Glenlyon farmhouse and steading followed. That same year the famous and influential thatched cottages at Kirkton were built. In 1890 Maclaren died at the age of 37. Dunn and Watson continued the practice completing Maclaren's designs for the Fortingall Hotel and the alterations to Glenlyon House. Dunn and Watson designed the now slated New Cottages in 1914 and this 'idyllic arts and crafts' village was completed in 1936 when W Curtis Green added the Village Hall. [...]	2004
