In several places, both in the heart of the village and beside it, are reminders of another important facet of village life-the quarries. Quarrying commenced in the late eighteenth century; it became and remained the most important source of local employment until well into the 1930s. One of the quarry holes now serves as the site of Deep Sea World. Nearby, Fortthside Terrace housed the quarry workmen.
