Scope and Content Plan of Skitten broch, Caithness, Highland A broch at Skitten croft at Kilmster, Wick, Caithness was partly excavated in 1904 by Sir Francis Tress Barry (1825-1907) who exposed approximately half of the inner wall face and central court. The site was excavated again in 1940 before it was bulldozed to make way for an aerodrome. This drawing by John Nicolson (1843-1934) shows a plan of the broch. As no report on Barry's work was ever published, this plan is valuable for our understanding of the site. Nicolson clearly shows the internal features and the external walls of the broch uncovered during excavation. Barry had a distinguished diplomatic and business career and took up archaeology late in life, when he was 65 years old. During his excavations he employed local people, including Nicolson. Nicolson was a skilled artist and recorded many of the archaeological sites discovered across the county. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
