Scope and Content Watercolour of stones at Shurrery, Caithness, Highland Caithness is the most northerly county in mainland Scotland. The county is incredibly rich in archaeological remains including chambered cairns, brochs and standing stones. This watercolour by John Nicolson (1843-1934) shows two standing stones at Shurrery. The drawing dates to 1901 and is annotated with their measurements and a statement that they are composed of white sandstone. These stones form the remains of a possible stone circle. Nicolson was born in Stemster, John O' Groats, and lived most of his life at Nybster. He was a skilled sculptor and artist with a keen interest in the archaeology of the area and undertook many excavations, illustrating his work and recovered artefacts in sketches and drawings. Nicolson's archive provides an invaluable and important record of archaeological activity in Caithness. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
