Scope and Content Watercolour of stone fire place from Hillhead broch, Caithness, Highland Hillhead broch, or 'The Pap', is located in farmland at Broadhaven just to the north of Wick in north-east Caithness. The site was excavated by Sir Francis Tress Barry (1825-1907) at the beginning of the 20th century, sometime between 1901 and 1902. It was one of a number of broch sites excavated by Barry between 1890 and 1904. This watercolour by John Nicolson (1843-1934) shows a large stone object. This is the same object mentioned by Barry in a lecture he gave in 1902 where he notes that, when excavating the inner area of the broch, he came across a 'large rough sandstone hollowed out and used for the fire'. Nicolson was born in Stemster, John O' Groats and lived at Nybster for most of his life. He was a skilled sculptor and artist with a keen interest in the archaeology of the area and assisted with many of Barry's excavations. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
