Scope and Content Bay of Laig and St Donnan's Church from north-east, Eigg, Small Isles, Highland The island of Eigg is one of the Small Isles along with Canna, Rum and Muck. It lies 16km off the west coast of Scotland and has been inhabited since at least Neolithic times (c.4000-2500 BC). Eigg was bought in 1997 by its residents in conjunction with the Scottish Wildlife Trust and the Highland Council. This shows the Bay of Laig, a natural landing place. The fertile soils of the low lands are divided into fields for farming, with the more rocky ground used for grazing sheep. The sharp angles of the 19th-century divisions impose order on a landscape previously divided along lines suggested by natural features in the land. St Donnan's Roman Catholic Church and Presbytery (centre), a Gothic-style structure with harled walls, was built in 1910. It is named after St Donnan, a disciple of St Columba, who settled on Eigg towards the end of the 6th century AD. He and his companions are said to have been murdered by a local Queen and her followers who saw his occupation of the island as a threat to their power. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
