Scope and Content Muck, Rum and Eigg from south-east, Small Isles, Highland Canna, Eigg, Muck and Rum form the Small Isles in the Inner Hebrides. Recent archaeological investigation and survey has demonstrated that the islands have been occupied since the Mesolithic (c.7500 BC). This view shows the isles of Muck (left), Canna (centre) and Eigg (right). The islands, with their contrasting landscapes of mountain, moorland and pasture are home to small populations of people traditionally engaged in farming and fishing. Tourism and conservation are becoming increasingly important to the islands economies. Eigg is owned by its residents, after they successfully bought the island in conjunction with the Scottish Wildlife Trust and the Highland Council in 1997. Rum was bought by Scottish Natural Heritage in 1957 and is now a nature reserve. Canna is owned by the National Trust for Scotland and Muck is still owned by the McEwan family, as it has been for the past 100 years. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
