Scope and Content Part of the township at Mingulay Bay, Mingulay, Western Isles Mingulay Bay lies on the east coast of the island of Mingulay at the southern end of the Western Isles. Since the first written accounts of the island, this has been the main settlement site and it was finally abandoned in 1912. Mingulay was bequeathed to the National Trust for Scotland by Miss J M Fawcett in 2000. This shows part of the centre of the township at the head of the sandy beach. The sand has covered a number of buildings. A paved track makes its way from the village centre towards the top left of the image. The grassy knoll (centre right) at the head of the beach is believed to be the site of St Columba's Chapel and graveyard which is mentioned by Archdeacon Munro in 1549. The settlement remains largely date to the early and mid-19th century, when population on the island expanded greatly. A census of 1881, records 150 inhabitants on the island.
