Scope and Content Tummel/Garry Project, [contract 17], Pitlochry Dam and Power Station, general view from downstream, 7 June 1950 Pitlochry Dam, and more especially its fish ladder, built in 1951, are a tourist attraction. More than 5,400 salmon fight against the current to reach the upper levels of the River Tummel to spawn each year. They bypass the hydro-electric power station by using a complex fish ladder, which incorporates resting pools for the fish, and glass panels to allow members of the public to watch their ascent. The exterior of the Pitlochry Power Station and Dam is shown here, as they neared completion. The power station is on the left. In the foreground is part of the fish ladder installed to allow salmon to ascend to their spawning grounds. Note the drum gates in the dam, which tilt to allow water to flow out. The main parts of the c.1950 Tummel Valley scheme were the building of a dam at the east end of Loch Tummel, the construction of a large power station at Clunie, and the building of Pitlochry Dam and power station. This is one of eight large schemes built by the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
