Cover of a brochure about the Falls of Clyde Hydro-Electric Scheme The Falls of Clyde hydro-electric scheme was the first large scheme of its type built for the public supply of electricity. It was constructed by the Lanarkshire Hydro-electric Power Company, a subsidiary of the Clyde Valley Electric Power Company, as an extension of that company's network of coal-fired power stations. This view shows the cover of a brochure probably produced for the completion of the scheme in 1928. The graphic design is typical of the late 1920s. The Clyde Valley 'logo' is an early example of that form of identification, while the drawing of the waterfall resembles the Art Nouveau style of twenty years earlier. There were two power stations in the Falls of Clyde scheme, the larger at Bonnington, above Lanark, and the smaller at Stonebyres, below that town. Both are still in use, though the equipment in them has been replaced. Later schemes in the Highlands and in Galloway were modelled on this one. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
