Scope and Content Tummel/Garry Project, contract 17, Pitlochry Dam and Power Station, interior of power station, 6 February 1950 The Tummel Valley Scheme has a catchment area of over 1839 square km of the Grampian Mountains and includes nine dams and nine power stations. The primary phase of the scheme (built by Grampian Electricity Supply) was opened in 1933, and extended in 1950 under the control of the North of Scotland Hydro Electric Board. This view shows the interior of the Pitlochry Power Station, with the heavy overhead crane installed to handle the turbines and parts of the generators in the pits in the floor, and for subsequent repairs. The crane was built by Babcock and Wilcox, probably in their Renfrew works. The main parts of the Tummel scheme comprised the building of a dam at the east end of Loch Tummel, the construction of a large power station at Clunie, and the building of Pitlochry Dam and Power Station. The scheme was one of eight large schemes built by the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board during the 1940s to 1960s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
