Scope and Content Tummel/Garry Project, contract 18, Clunie Pipe Line, view of trifurcation, 5 April 1949 The Tummel hydro-electric scheme includes nine power stations and nine dams, built between the 1930 and the 1950s. Clunie Dam spans Loch Tummel, and measures 21m high and 115m long. Water from the dam is channelled via a tunnel to Clunie Power Station where it is used to rotate turbines and turn generators to produce 165 million units of electricity annually. This view shows the steelwork for the division into three of water brought in tunnel from Loch Tummel. Each of the three pipes on the left leads to one of the turbines in the Clunie Power Station. Note that the pipework is all riveted. Riveting would soon be supplanted by welding for such components. The main parts of the Tummel Valley scheme were the building of a dam at the east end of Loch Tummel, the construction of a large power station at Clunie, and the building of a combined power station and dam at Pitlochry. This is one of eight large schemes built by the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
