Scope and Content Tummel/Garry Project, contract 17, Pitlochry Dam and Power Station, general view from left bank, 9 March 1949 Pitlochry Dam was completed in 1951and measures 144m long and 16m high. Its adjacent power station utilises the water of Loch Faskally, a man-made reservoir that was created by the construction of the dam. Pitlochry Power Station has an installed capacity of 15 megawatts and an annual output of 55 million units of power. This view shows the construction of the Pitlochry Dam and Power Station at a fairly early stage. The steel-pile dam in the foreground is keeping the river Tummel out of the site, and the building of the concrete piers of the dam is well under way. The cranes were used for placing concrete. The main parts of the Tummel Valley scheme were the building of a Clunie Dam at the east end of Loch Tummel, the construction of Clunie Power Station, and the building of Pitlochry Dam and Power Station. This is one of eight large schemes built by the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board during the 1940s to 1960s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
