Scope and Content Tummel/Garry Project, contract 14, Clunie Power Station, general view from tailrace, 4 October 1949 Clunie Power Station was completed by 1950, and has an installed capacity of 61.2 megawatts, and an average output of 165 million units of power. It uses the power of water diverted by a tunnel from Loch Tummel to turn turbines which rotate generators to produce electricity. This view shows the exterior of the Clunie Power Station from the downstream side. The three large openings in the basement are for the waste water from the three turbo-generators. The upper part of the building, built of reinforced concrete, has been clad in natural stone to improve its appearance. Clunie Power Station was built as part of the Tummel Valley Scheme which was one of eight large schemes commissioned by the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board during the 1940s to 1960s. The main parts of this scheme comprised the building of a dam at the east end of Loch Tummel, the construction of the power station at Clunie, and the building of a combined power station and dam at Pitlochry.
