Scope and Content Tummel/Garry Project, contract 19, Pitlochry Dam, drum gates: left gate spilling, 9 September 1950 Pitlochry Dam, part of the Tummel Valley hydro-electric scheme, was completed in 1951. It is of the 'mass gravity' type, which relies on its mass for stability. The concrete walls of the dam are thinnest at the top of the reservoir where water pressure is light, and much thicker at the base where the pressure is greatest. This view shows the 'drum' gates at Pitlochry Dam and power station at an advance stage of construction. These automatic 'drum' gates were the first example of this particular type used in Britain. When required, the hollow drum of each gate tilts forward automatically into a flotation chamber and the water spills over the crest. The Tummel Valley Scheme operated a cascade system whereby the water that flowed through the Pitlochry Power Station, as the last of nine power stations in the scheme, may well have already flowed through three or four other power stations before hand. The main elements of the scheme comprised the building of a dam at the east end of Loch Tummel, the construction of a large power station at Clunie, and the building of the Pitlochry Dam and Power Station. This is one of eight large schemes built by the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
