Scope and Content Mullardoch-Fasnakyle-Affric Project, contract no 10, Fasnakyle Generating Station, view of mouth of south pipe tunnel, 2 March 1948 Mullardoch dam was completed by 1952, and was built by the contractors John Cochrane & Sons Ltd. A tunnel over 5km in length extends from the dam to carry water to Loch Benevean and a further tunnel (also 5km in length) takes the flow on to Fasnakyle generating station. Here is the mouth of the tunnel from Loch Benevean to Fasnakyle Power Station. Note the timbering to support the tunnel mouth, necessary because this section of tunnel is being driven through glacial till, not rock. In the tunnel mouth is a small locomotive for hauling spoil from the working face. This tunnel is a component of the Mullardoch-Fasnakyle-Affric Project which was the first part of the Affric/Beauly scheme to be built. The Affric/Beauly scheme is one of eight large schemes built by the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board from the 1940s to the 1960s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
