Scope and Content Mullardoch-Fasnakyle-Affric Project, contract no 9, Mullardoch Dam, south stilling pool looking south east, needle valve full open, 5 May 1952 Mullardoch Dam is part of the Affric/Beauly scheme. It was completed in 1952 and is 727m long and 48m high, making it the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board's largest dam. A tunnel diverts water from Loch Mullardoch into Loch Benevean on the River Affic, where a smaller dam directs the flow to the large generating station at Fasnakyle. This view shows water being discharged through the south wing of the Mullardoch dam, through one of the culverts installed primarily to scour silt out of the loch. The stilling basin allows the turbulent water to settle before flowing into the river Cannich. The needle valve controls the flow of water through the dam. The Mullardoch-Fasnakyle-Affric Project was the first part of the Affric/Beauly scheme to be built. The Affric/Beauly scheme is one of eight large schemes built by the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board from the 1940s to 1960s. Great care was taken in its design and construction to minimise the impact on the fine scenery in the area. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
