Scope and Content Mullardoch-Fasnakyle-Affric Project, contract no 9, Mullardoch subsidiary generating station, end of discharge tunnel and turbine draught tube, 29 October 1951 Scottish and Southern Energy plc. control 54 of Scotland's hydro-electric power stations. These have a combined capacity of over 1,000 megawatts per year. The various schemes across the Highlands include 56 main dams, 300 km of rock tunnel, and many different aqueducts and pipelines. All rely on the efficient channelling of water to supply turbines and generators within the various hydro-electric power stations. This view shows, in the roof, the lower end of the tapering steel tube which forms the outlet from the single water turbine in the generating station by the Mullardoch dam. The waste water will flow along this tunnel to Loch Benevean. The generating station was first commissioned in 1955 and, with the dam, forms part of the Mullardoch-Fasnakyle-Affric Project. This project was the first part of the Affric/Beauly Scheme to be built by the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board and great care was taken in its design and construction to minimise the impact on the scenery in the area. The Affric/ Beauly scheme was one of eight large schemes built by the Board from the 1940s to the 1960s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
