Scope and Content Mullardoch-Fasnakyle-Affric Project, contract no 9, subsidiary generating station, open cut and portal of intake tunnel, 2 April 1951 Hydro-electric power stations produce electricity by using the power of flowing water to rotate turbines which then turn generators. Water released from the Mullardoch Dam passes through a small generating station and then through a tunnel to Loch Benevean. From there the waters flow through another tunnel to the large power station at Fasnakyle. This view shows the entrance to the tunnel leading to the Mullardoch Generating Station, at an early stage in its construction, as can be seen by the newly blasted rock at the opening. The small diesel locomotive on the left is typical of those used on this contract. The Mullardoch Power Station is a component of the Mullardoch-Fasnakyle-Affric Project and was the first part of the Affric/Beauly scheme to be built by the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board. Great care was taken in its design and construction to minimise the impact on the fine scenery in the area. The Affric/ Beauly scheme is one of eight large schemes built by the Board from the 1940s to the 1960s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
