Scope and Content Mullardoch-Fasnakyle-Affric Project, contract no 9, Mullardoch Dam, general view looking east from tunnel tip, 4 June 1950 Mullardoch Dam, the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board's largest dam, was completed by 1952. The structure spans Loch Mullardoch, and is 727m long and 48m high. It is built in the form of two concrete wings which meet, at an angle of 140 degrees, on a small island in the middle of the dam. This view shows the north wing of the dam nearing completion, with the island between the two wings on the right. Most of the north wing is complete to its crest. Note the opening left for the waters of Loch Mullardoch to run down as the river Cannich. This was later filled. The Mullardoch-Fasnakyle-Affric Project was the first part of the Affric/Beauly scheme to be built. Great care was taken in its design and construction to minimise the impact on the fine scenery in the area. The Affric/Beauly scheme is one of eight large schemes built by the Board from the 1940s to the 1960s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
