Scope and Content Strathfarrar Works Contract 101, Deanie Power Station, machine chamber viewed from loading bay, 4 April 1963 Deanie Power Station was commissioned in 1963, and constructed by the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board. It is a hydro-electric power station which uses the power of flowing water released from a reservoir to turn turbines, which then rotate generators to produce electricity. Hydro-electric power stations are flexible, and can be turned on and off according to demand, unlike nuclear or thermal power stations. This view shows the interior of the Deanie Power Station. The non-moving parts of the water-turbine-driven alternators (stators) are being assembled. The turbines are in pits below, driving the moving parts of the alternators (rotors) which fit into the holes in the centres of the stators. Deanie Power Station is part of the Strathfarrar scheme which comprises four power stations, five dams and two lengthy tunnels. The power station was built below ground to minimise the impact on the scenery in the strath. The Strathfarrar scheme forms part of the larger Affric/Beauly scheme, one of eight large hydro-electric schemes built by the Board from the 1940s to 1960s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
