Scope and Content Strathfarrar Works Contract 101, Deanie Power Station, machine chamber, concreting surround to no 1 machine spiral casing, intermediate stage, 31, October 1962 The Affric/Beauly Hydro-Electric Scheme (which includes Deanie Power Station) was built from the late 1940s by the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board in an area to the north west of Inverness. The Strathfarrar part of the scheme raised the level of Loch Monar, with water taken in tunnel to an underground generating station at Deanie. This view shows the interior of the Deanie Power Station. In the centre is the steel spiral tube which will direct water from the tunnel from Loch Monar on to the turbine rotor, which will revolve in the circular opening in the middle of the spiral. The spiral is being embedded in reinforced concrete. The Strathfarrar scheme has four power stations, five dams and two lengthy tunnels. Great care was taken in its design and construction to minimise the impact on the fine highland scenery in the strath. The Affric/Beauly scheme is one of eight large schemes built by the Board from the 1940s to the 1960s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
