Scope and Content Strathfarrar Works Contract 101, Deanie Tunnel, intake bellmouth and gate tower, 2 October 1962 Deanie hydro-electric Power Station is concealed below ground at the western end of Loch Beannacharan. The area around the power station was long thought to have great potential for water-power by the Resources Committee of the Government (from at least 1918). Plans for development were not approved until 1947. The intake gate tower at Loch Monar, is shown nearing completion. The lower openings will channel water from the raised Loch Monar into the tunnel leading to Deanie Power Station. Above the openings is the tower from which will be operated the sluices controlling the flow of water into the tunnel. The Loch Monar Dam and Deanie Power Station are part of the Strathfarrar scheme which comprises four power stations, five dams and two lengthy tunnels. Great care was taken in their design and construction to minimise the impact on the scenery in the strath. The Affric/Beauly scheme, of which Strathfarrar is a part, is one of eight large schemes built by the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board during the 1940s to 1960s.
