Scope and Content Strathfarrar Works Contract 101, Deanie Tunnel, intake gate shaft, 19 December 1961 Hydro-electric power stations, like Deanie (commissioned 1963) harness the power of flowing water to rotate turbines which then turn generators. Water powered turbines do not require expensive fuel to turn water into steam, as in conventional power stations, and the same water can be used by several power stations as it flows downhill from the reservoir. Construction of the intake gate tower at Loch Monar is shown in this image. The face of the intake tunnel is being concreted, and part of the foundations of the tower can be seen in front of the tunnel mouth. On the right is part of the dam which will impound the waters of the loch, to supply the Deanie Power Station. The Strathfarrar scheme has four power stations, five dams and two lengthy tunnels. Great care was taken in its design and construction to minimise the impact on the fine highland scenery in the strath. The Affric/Beauly scheme is one of eight large schemes built by the Board from the 1940s to the 1960s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
