Scope and Content Strathfarrar Works Contract 101, Deanie Power Station, machine chamber roof looking south, 2 August 1961 The Strathfarrar scheme is part of the Affric/Beauly Hydro-Electric Scheme constructed by the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board in an area to the north west of Inverness. Hydro-electric power stations produce electricity by using the power of flowing water to rotate turbines, which then turn generators. The construction of the underground power station, with the shuttering in place for the casting off the concrete roof, while excavation of the lower part of the chamber is still taking place. The shuttering is effectively a mould for the lower surface of the roof of the chamber. The Strathfarrar scheme has four power stations, five dams and two tunnels. Great care was taken in its design and construction to minimise the impact on the fine highland scenery in the strath. The Affric/Beauly scheme is one of eight large schemes built by the Board from the 1940s to 1960s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
