Scope and Content Strathfarrar Works Contract 101, Deanie Tunnel, concrete conveyor and placer for tunnel shutter, 5 January 1961 Deanie Power Station was commissioned in 1963 and built below ground near the western end of Loch Beannacharan by North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board. The size of the loch itself was increased by the construction of the Beannacharan Dam across the nearby River Farrar. This view shows the entrance section at the Loch Monar end of the tunnel, with a mobile device for placing concrete between the outside of a section of shuttering (a mould to form the lining of the tunnel) and the rough rock. This will give a smooth finish, instead of the rock face seen in this view. The Strathfarrar scheme forms part of the Affric/Beauly Hydro-Electric Scheme and comprises four power stations, five dams and two lengthy tunnels. Great care was taken in its design and construction to minimise the impact on the fine highland scenery in the strath. The Affric/Beauly scheme is one of eight large schemes built by the Board from the 1940s to the 1960s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
