Scope and Content Strathfarrar Works Contract 101, Deanie Tunnel, surge shaft excavation looking south east, 5 May 1960 Deanie Power Station is hidden beneath the ground near the western end of Loch Beannacharan. A 9km long tunnel carries water to drive two vertical shaft Francis turbines. It was commissioned in 1963 and constructed by the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board. This view shows the start of the excavation of the surge shaft upstream from the Deanie Power Station. The circle of steel strip defines the edge of the shaft, which is being blasted out of solid rock. The men on the floor of the shaft are drilling shot holes, which will be filled with explosives to break up the rock. The Deanie Power Station is one of four power stations constructed as part of the Strathfarrar scheme. It was built underground to reduce the impact on the fine highland scenery in the strath. The Strathfarrar scheme formed a part of the Affric/Beauly scheme, one of eight large schemes built by the Board from the 1940s to the 1960s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
