Scope and Content Strathfarrar Works Contracts 101 and 104, camp area at Loch a' Mhuillidh from the east, 30 Aril 1959 Two failed bills, in 1929 and 1941 by The Grampian Electricity Company preceded the actual commissioning of the Affric/Beauly hydro-electric scheme in the late 1940s-early 1950s. The main features of the scheme are two large tunnels and the Monar Dam, which was the first double-curvature dam to be built in Britain. This view shows the road up Strathfarrar as improved and given an asphalt surface to handle construction traffic, leading to a hutted camp for construction workers. The wildness of the area is clearly evident. Such camps brought large numbers of men into the areas from Ireland and the Lowlands of Scotland. The Strathfarrar scheme has four power stations, five dams and two lengthy tunnels. Great care was taken to minimise the impact on the fine highland scenery in the strath. The Affric/Beauly scheme is one of eight large schemes built by the Board from the 1940s to 1960s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
