Scope and Content Vaulted tower windmill, Gordonstoun, Moray This is an example of the oldest surviving group of windmills. These all apparently date from the late 17th century, and are remarkably similar in dimensions and construction. They are found as far north as Moray (this one), and as far south as the Mull of Galloway. This view shows the mill, which is on an artificial mound with its slender tower, probably originally housing a single pair of millstones. The vault which extended from the base of the mill has been buried, and the tapering top courses were added when the building was converted into a doocot. Mills like this one seem to have fallen out of use in the late 18th and early 19th century. The harling and the burying of the vault have obscured the original character of the mill, but its dimensions are very similar to those of other mills of the type.
