Scope and Content Strathfarrar Works Contract 101, Deanie Power Station, transformer compound, 11 May 1966 Deanie Power Station, with its capacity of 38 megawatts, was commissioned in 1963. Most of the complex is hidden below ground, to preserve the beauty of the surrounding landscape. The turbines within the power station are driven by water from the River Farrar, contained by the Monar dam. The transformer compound next to the entrance tunnel leading to the Deanie Power Station. The transformers in the centre take current, generated at low voltage in the station, and increase the voltage to 33,000 for transmission by overhead lines to the National Grid. The Strathfarrar scheme forms part of the Affric/Beauly Hydro-Electric Scheme and has four power stations, five dams and two lengthy tunnels. The Affric/Beauly scheme is one of eight large schemes built by the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board during the 1940s to 1960s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
