Scope and Content Strathfarrar Works Contract 101, Deanie Power Station, machine chamber, 6 August 1964 The subterranean power station of Deanie was commissioned in 1963, and uses water from the River Farrar stored by the Monar dam to drive its turbines. After flowing through the station, the water passes to a reservoir created by Bennachran dam, and then goes on to flow into Culligan Power Station. Deanie Power Station was built underground to reduce the impact on the fine highland scenery. The interior of the underground Deanie Power Station, almost complete, with the two alternators on their concrete plinths. The water turbines to drive them are under the plinths. The cabinets to the rear contain control equipment. Note the crane used for installing and maintaining equipment. The Strathfarrar scheme has four power stations, five dams and two tunnels. The Affric/Beauly scheme is one of eight large schemes built by the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board from the 1940s to 1960s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
