Scope and Content Strathfarrar Works Contract 101, Deanie Power Station, access tunnel portal, 1 April 1964 The Strathfarrar scheme is part of the Affric/Beauly Hydro-Electric Scheme constructed by the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board in an area north-west of Inverness. This part of the scheme raised the level of Loch Monar, which supplies water via a tunnel to an underground generating station at Deanie. This view shows the entrance to the tunnel leading to the underground Deanie Power Station. The tunnel is large enough to take vehicles carrying part of the water turbines and alternators installed in the station. Note the stone facing of the tunnel portal, to reduce environmental impact. The Strathfarrar scheme has four power stations, five dams and two tunnels. Great care was taken in its design and construction to minimise the impact on the fine highland scenery in the strath. The Affric/Beauly scheme is one of eight large schemes built by the Board from the 1940s to 1960s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
