Catalogue Number SC 803950

Scope and Content Kibble Palace, Botanic Gardens, No 703 Great Western Road, Glasgow, from south-south-east This view from the south-south-east, taken in 1979, shows the interior of the main rotunda, which incorporates Kibble's material in the inner dome. The outer ring is part of the additions made in 1873. The sculpture is from the main hall at Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum, removed when tastes changed. Kibble leased the rebuilt glasshouse from the Corporation, and used it for concerts and other gatherings. After these ended it became a temperate house for the Botanic Gardens, which it remains. There are plans for a substantial overhaul of the building. This is one of the finest Victorian glasshouses in Britain. It had its origin in a large conservatory built beside his marine villa at Coulport, Loch Long, by Mr John Kibble. In 1871 he sold the conservatory to Glasgow Corporation, and it a was re-erected with significant additions in the Botanic Gardens in 1873. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
