Scope and Content Gravestone of George Black, Lagganallachie Church and Burial-Ground, Perth & Kinross The top of this gravestone features a winged soul (symbol of the spirit ascending to Heaven after death), which hovers over a shield carved with the sock and coulter (metal parts) of a plough (the emblem of a farmer). Below is carved an image of Adam and Eve next to the Tree of Knowledge. The serpent is curled around the trunk of the tree as he tempts Eve with an apple. A row of death emblems (skull, bones and an hourglass) are carved below a ribbon inscribed: 'MEMENTO MORI' (remember you must die). The Biblical story of Adam and Eve represents the Fall of Man, and the need to be obedient to God. The story also suggests the coming of Christ (sometimes called the 'second Adam') and redemption. This gravestone commemorates George Black, who died in 1764. It is inscribed: 'HERE LYES GEORGE BLACK/LATE TENNANT IN TEREVACK/WHO DIED THE 26 OF DECEMEBR/1764 AGED 73'.
