Scope and Content Gravestone of Margaret Hill, Errol Parish Church Graveyard, Perth & Kinross This elaborately carved gravestone features a scrolled top with rosettes (emblems of rebirth) from which grow vines and grapes which cover the heads of two winged souls. These represent the spirits of the dead ascending to Heaven, and the grapes are emblems of Christ. Between the souls is a Crown of Righteousness, the reward awaiting the godly in Heaven. Below are two crossed palm fronds, further emblems of Resurrection. In the centre of the stone is a shield carved with initials. It is surrounded by a helmet and lush foliage. The flaming torches at the side of the tomb symbolises eternal life (the top, flaming end) and death (the bottom, extinguished end). At the base of the stone are skull, bones, a scythe and dart and an hourglass, linked by a ribbon. This is a 'trophy' of death emblems, designed to remind the viewer of their own mortality. This gravestone commemorates Margaret Hill, who died in 1752. It is inscribed: 'This stone is erected by/ROBERT HILL Tenant/ in Inchmichal and Ketherine Mitchell/his spouse in memory of their Daughter/Margaret Hill she died January 26th/1752 aged two years seven months'.
