Scope and Content Detail of the gravestone of John and James Douglas, St Anne's Church and Churchyard, Dowally, Perth & Kinross This shows the base of the gravestone with its scene of Adam and Eve beside the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden. The arch above them is inscribed: 'THE SERPENT DECIEVED EVE'. Both figures wear small loin cloths made of leaves, and have similar, child-like faces. Eve holds the apple which the snake (coiled around the tree trunk) has just given her. Further apples can be seen on the branches of the tree. Scenes of Adam and Eve are frequently found on Scottish gravestones. This Biblical story illustrates the need to be obedient to God, and reinforces the message that it was mankind's weakness which brought sorrow and suffering into the perfect world God had created. This gravestone commemorates John Douglas, and James Douglas, who died in 1782. It is inscribed: '1782/Erected by William Douglas/& Janet Wilson in memory of their/two sons: JOHN DOUGLAS AND JAMES/DOUGLAS FARMER AT DRUMMEN/who died 29th September 1782/aged 25 years'.
