Scope and Content Gravestone of 'E A' and 'I S', Abbey Church, Queen Street, Coupar Angus, Perth & Kinross This gravestone features a scrolled pediment resting upon Ionic pilasters. Within the central panel is a winged soul (symbol of the spirit ascending to Heaven after death), above a selection of wright's (woodworker's) tools (centre) and three death emblems (bottom). The tools are carefully carved, and include a set-square, axe, mallet, chisel and dividers. The death emblems include a rather elongated skull in profile, crossed bones and an hourglass (emblem of life's brevity). The prominent positioning of these tools upon the gravestone indicate the pride the craftsman took in his trade. This elaborate gravestone ensured he was remembered for his skills as well as his piety and beliefs. This gravestone commemorates 'E A' and 'I S', and is dated 1763. It was 'renewed' by a joiner called Robert Pennycook in 1913, and used to record subsequent family burials. It is not clear whether Mr Pennycook was a member of the original owner's family, or if he simply reused an attractive stone. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
