Scope and Content Photographic copy of perspective sketch of Kellie Castle, Fife, from south-east This sketch was made in 1870 by the architect W F Lyon (b.1845). It shows the south elevation of the castle. The east tower (right) was the second part of the castle to be built, in 1573. The L-shaped block, linking the east tower with the older north tower, was constructed between 1603 and 1606. The roof of the north tower can just be seen above the linking block. In the 1870s, Kellie Castle was leased by Professor James Allan Lorimer (1818-90). The Lorimer family went on to restore the castle and lay out the gardens. Much of the original structure of the castle can still be seen, as no substantial additions or alterations were made by the Lorimers. The lease remained in the Lorimer family, as it was taken on by the architect Robert Lorimer (1864-1929), James's son. The castle was then purchased by Robert's son, Hew (1907-93) an eminent sculptor. In 1970, the castle was purchased by The National Trust for Scotland, and is now open to the public. Kellie Castle is situated 4km north of St Monans, in Fife. The history of the estate can be traced back to the 12th century, when the name is recorded in a royal charter. The building itself dates from the 15th century, although parts of it may have been constructed on older foundations. Most of the castle was built by 1610, when it was under the ownership of the Oliphant family. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
