Scope and Content Dormer windows on south elevation, Kellie Castle, Fife This photograph shows a detail of dormer windows on the south elevation of the castle. This part of the building was built between 1603 and 1606, linking two older towers. Although badly weathered, the carvings above the windows bear three crescent moons, the symbol of the Oliphant family. The roof covering is of Ballachulish slate, replacing the original Arbroath stone slabs. Professor James Allan Lorimer (1818-90) leased the castle in the 1870s, beginning an association with the Lorimer family which would last over a century. Together with his family, including his famous architect son Robert Lorimer (1864-1929), the castle and garden were carefully restored. The sculptor Hew Lorimer (1907-93), Robert's son, continued this work with his purchase of the castle, and after passing Kellie to The National Trust for Scotland, remained as the Trust's representative. Kellie Castle, situated 4km north of St Monans, is a fine example of Scottish architecture. It was built between the 15th and 17th centuries and has changed relatively little, being carefully restored rather than altered or added to. Before being purchased by The National Trust for Scotland in 1970, the castle was owned by three families: the Oliphants, the Earls of Kellie and the Lorimers. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
