Scope and Content Kellie Castle, Fife, from north-east This photograph was taken in 1966, and shows the castle from the walled garden. The oldest parts of the castle, the north (right) and east (left) towers can be seen. The towers were constructed between the 15th and 16th centuries, and may have been joined by a courtyard or passage. Between 1603 and 1606 the L-plan linking block was constructed, creating a T-plan building. The garden was designed by the architect Robert Lorimer (1856-1929). He carried out some of his first architectural work at the castle, and also designed furniture for the interior. When the Lorimer family first came to Kellie, the garden was recorded as being very overgrown, although some roses which existed then were preserved for the newer garden. Kellie Castle is situated 4km north of St Monans. Its history can be traced back to the 12th century, when Kellie received a mention in a royal charter. The earliest parts of the building date from the 15th or 16th century, the period when the Oliphant family owned the estate. After being restored by the Lorimer family from the 1870s, the castle was purchased in 1970 by The National Trust for Scotland, and is now open to the public. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
