These include a pair of open scissors and an iron, known as a 'tailor's goose' due to its distinctive shape. Scottish gravestones feature a wealth of imagery and symbolic devices which represent trade emblems, symbols of death and resurrection, and Biblical scenes. They offer a fascinating insight into how our ancestors saw themselves and how they wanted to be remembered, as well as providing a store of information for people interested in family or local history, and folk art. This gravestone, dated 1700, commemorates Hendrie Adam, Elspeth Muir and Andrew Adam's children. It is inscribed: 'HERE LYES/HENDRIE ADAM &/ELSPETH MUIR/HIS SPOUSE ALSO/HERE LYES TUO CHI/LDRING TO ANDREW ADAM HIS SON AND/THE PLACE APOYNTED/FOR HIS FAMILIE'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
