Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating John Liddle, St Kentigern's Church, Hyndford Road, Lanark, South Lanarkshire On this face of the stone, a winged soul rises above a tasselled swag filled with bones. Further bones can be seen crossed behind the soul, and a skull rests upon the soul's chest. These symbols offer an insight into the beliefs that James Liddel held. The skull and bones are a graphic reminder of death's absolute certainty and urge the viewer to consider his or her own mortality. However, this scene is one of hope as the immortal soul rises above the bones, freed from these decayed mortal remains, demonstrating a belief that life continues after death. This gravestone commemorates John Liddel, a weaver in Lanark who died some time in the eighteenth century. The inscription reads: 'THIS IS THE BURIAL PLACE/OF JAMES LIDDEL WEAVER/IN LANARK...'. The rest of the inscription is lost due to weathering. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
