Scope and Content Library, Pollok House, Pollok Park, Pollokshaws Road, Glasgow, from north This photograph, taken in 2000, shows that the library is divided into three compartments. Sir John ensured that the library was designed to be able to hold 7,000 books, and two paintings by El Greco (1541-1614) are prominently displayed here. The grand piano is a relatively recent addition, as the library has been used since 1960 for chamber concerts. The windows in the central compartment of the library overlook a parterre, beyond which lies a rhododendron walk, both designed by Sir John. The library at Pollok House is situated in the eastern pavilion. It was built in around 1905 for Sir John Stirling Maxwell (1867-1956), 10th Baronet. The original part of the house was built in the mid-18th century, on lands that had been held by the Maxwell family since the 13th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
