Catalogue Number SC 800311

Copy of STD 136/58

Scope and Content Photographic copy of east elevation of Great Hall, Stirling Castle, Stirling This drawing, made in about 1959 by Geoffrey D Hay, shows the east elevation of the Great Hall, as reconstructed from evidence contained within the fabric of the building, which had been converted into a barrack block in about 1800. This was the first scholarly attempt to recreate the appearance of this building. The Great Hall and the palace in Stirling are Scotland's finest early modern secular buildings. Since the army moved out of the castle the Great Hall has been carefully restored, on the basis of this drawing and more recent research. Other parts of the complex have also been restored, and the castle is open to the public under the care of Historic Scotland. Stirling Castle is strategically situated on the best route by land between lowland and highland Scotland, and the rock on which it sits has probably been inhabited since prehistoric times. It was both fortress and royal palace, and has some of the best of both types of architecture in Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
