Scope and Content Smailholm Tower, Scottish Borders, from south-east This view from the south-east, taken in about 1932-8, shows the tower on its rocky knoll, with the arched entrance on the south face. The ground floor is vaulted, and was used for storage. The kitchen was in a single-storeyed block to the north-west of the tower, behind it in this view. The rebuilding of the top floor was to convert the building into a beacon tower, to signal to Hume Castle, part of a network of such towers throughout the Borders. Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) spent part of his childhood in the vicinity. The building was given into State care in 1950 by the Earl of Ellesmere. Now in the care of Historic Scotland, it is open to the public. Smailholm Tower is situated on a rocky hill nearly 200m above sea level, and has extensive views. The tower was probably built in the early 16th century, and had a courtyard, or barmkin, attached to it, containing the kitchen and other buildings. The top storey was rebuilt, probably in the 17th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
