Scope and Content Garden front, Pollok House, Pollokshaws Road, Glasgow, from south-east It is thought that the exterior of the central core of the house has changed little since the time of construction. The single-storeyed wings, added in the late 19th century, contain the billiard room and library. The newer additions bear much more decoration than the austere block of the older structure. The terraced garden was laid out in the early years of the 20th century. Most of the additions were designed by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson (1834-1921), an Edinburgh-based architect. Sir John Stirling Maxwell (1867-1956), who commissioned the late 19th and early 20th century work, was a founder member of The National Trust for Scotland. He was also a Commissioner of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (1940-9). Pollok House was first built in the mid-18th century, and altered by subsequent generations of the Maxwell family. The house and grounds are now in the care of The National Trust for Scotland, and are open to the public. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
