Scope and Content War memorial in garden wall, Pollok House, Pollok Park, Pollokshaws Road, Glasgow The memorial is built into a garden wall, and is unusual in showing names of those who served in World War I, as most memorials only record the names of those who died. It shows that of the 58 men who went to war, 12 died. During World War I, the owner of the estate, Sir John Stirling Maxwell (1867-1956), allowed the house to be used as a military hospital. Photographs documenting this period now hang in the long basement corridor of the house, which is now open to the public, and is in the care of The National Trust for Scotland. Pollok House was built in the mid-18th century, and added to over the centuries by members of the Maxwell family. This war memorial, built into a garden wall, records the names of men from the estate who served in World War I. As well as being an interesting historical document, it gives some indication of the numbers of people required to work on an estate. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
