Scope and Content Lion on gate pier, Pollok House, Pollokshaws Road, Glasgow The lions stand on their hind legs, holding the coat-of-arms of the Maxwell family. A similar shield can be seen on the entrance front of the house. Hew Lorimer also carved urns which sit on the terraces leading up to the house. Hew Lorimer, in addition to sculpting garden features such as this, also worked on a number of larger projects, including the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh. This sculpture is one of a matching pair to be found in the formal gardens to the south of Pollok House. Commissioned by Sir John Stirling Maxwell (1867-1956), the lions were carved in the 1940s by the sculptor Hew Lorimer (1907-93), son of the famous architect Sir Robert Lorimer (1864-1929).
