Scope and Content West Pavilion, Pollok House, Pollok Park, Pollokshaws Road, Glasgow This pavilion is one of a pair which stand on the terraced gardens, overlooking the White Cart Water. Built in the early years of the 20th century, the pavilions provided a place to stop on a walk around the garden. The ogee roof of the pavilion is typical of this type of building. Pollok House and its gardens have been in the care of The National Trust for Scotland and Glasgow City Council since 1966. Sir John Stirling Maxwell was one of the founder members of the Trust, and was also a Commissioner of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (1940-9). The terraced gardens to the south of Pollok House were laid out in the early 20th century, to designs by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson (1834-1921). The owner of the estate, Sir John Stirling Maxwell (1867-1956), probably also contributed to the designs, as he had a keen interest in architecture and horticulture.
