Scope and Content Servants' Hall, Pollok House, Pollok Park, Pollokshaws Road, Glasgow, from north-west The servants' hall is where staff dined and socialised. However, even mealtimes would have been strictly regulated and organised according to each member of staff's rank. It is seen here after conversion to a meeting room. The size of the room indicates the large number of staff which were required at Pollok. The serving staff would have been divided into 'upper' and 'lower' servants, with the housekeeper and butler taking charge of the female and male staff respectively. The service quarters of Pollok House were re-designed around 1900 by the architect Sir Robert Rowand Anderson (1834-1921). Comprising over 40 rooms, the basement provides a fascinating insight into the huge organisation that was required to keep a country house running. Now in the care of The National Trust for Scotland, the house is open to the public. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
